HP Insight Diagnostics
Insight Diagnostics represents an enhancement to currently available service tools such as
Inspect and the Survey Utility. Inspect has long been used as an offline utility to capture
detailed hardware configuration information such as types of hardware devices. The
Survey Utility was the traditional online utility used to gather software and critical error
log information.
Insight Diagnostics replaces this capability by capturing software information in addition
to the hardware elements, allowing access to and management of the Integrated
Management Log, and the ability to manage and compare various Survey sessions.
Insight Diagnostics delivers this critical data, and addresses customer requirements for
enhanced service tools and higher server availability through its comprehensive feature
design:
* Online installation and operation - No requirement to take the server offline or
reboot the server in order to use Insight Diagnostics.
* Comprehensive configuration capture under a single tool - Gathers detailed
hardware and operating system configuration information under a single tool.
* Automatic configuration audit trail - Automatically maintains a configuration
history for the server. By storing multiple configuration snapshots and highlighting
changes and differences, the utility can provide a detailed record of the server history.
* Integrated Management Log Viewer - Allows you to view and manage the
Integrated Management Log (IML) system event entries on a local or remote system.
This non-volatile log records system events and errors for post diagnosis review thus
helping system administrators to promptly identify server failures.
Insight Diagnostics no longer uses proprietary ASCII text files like the Survey Utility.
Insight Diagnostics has made an evolutionary change by generating XML files instead of
ASCII text files. XML is a widely implemented industry standard and this allows our
customers to take full advantage of a wide variety of available tools to parse the Survey
XML data. XML provides flexibility, accessibility, and portability advantages over the
ASCII text files produced by the legacy Survey Utility. Searching the Survey data is now
easier and more efficient than the legacy Survey Utility. Search engines can simply parse
the description-bearing tags rather than muddling in the data.
Insight Diagnostics includes a Web browser interface in addition to the command-line
Interface. This enables remote control of the utility and facilitates easy transfer of
configuration information from remote machines to a service provider. It can be updated
from the Version Control Repository Manager (VCRM), using the Version Control Agent
(VCA) and with Systems Insight Manager (SIM), which offers pro-active notification
when an updated version is available.
For more information on HP Insight Diagnostics, review the White Paper available on the
HP Insight Diagnostics website at http://www.hp.com/servers/diags. To review
information on other ProLiant Essentials software, including VCRM, VCA, and SIM,
visit http://www.hp.com/servers/proliantessentials.
Transitioning the Survey Utility
HP Insight Diagnostics Online Edition replaces the Survey Utility in the ProLiant
Support Packs for Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows Server 2003. As a
result, all new feature development will be focused on Insight Diagnostics Online Edition.
The Survey Utility for those two operating systems will be available from the website
www.hp.com/go/support, for legacy systems, however, there will be no support for this
utility after December 2004. HP Insight Diagnostics Online Edition offers enhanced
functionality over the Survey Utility. HP recommends that customers transition to the
HP Insight Diagnostics for additional operating system support, increased functionality,
and continued maintenance.

Converting Survey XML
A stylesheet file named survey.xsl has been provided to convert a Survey XML file to HTML or plain ASCII text files. You can use this stylesheet with existing utilities available on the Internet. Examples of such tools are Microsoft Windows MSXSL or open source EXSLT for Linux. The command line for both of these example utilities is the same:
Utility_Name XML_file_name XSL_file_name -o HTML_file_name
Example:
Msxsl.exe survey2004-11-10-07-54-29.xml survey.xsl -o survey.html
To output a file in HTML, make sure the xsl:output tag is set to "HTML". To output a file in plain ASCII text format, make sure the xsl:output tag is set to "text".
Examples:
HTML file:
Text file:

of Insight Diagnostics for Windows. Both versions of Insight Diagnostics are listed
in the Microsoft Windows Add/Remove Programs. If Insight Diagnostics is executed
from the Start Menu, a blank white window appears and Insight Diagnostics does
not start. In the System Management Homepage, two links for Insight Diagnostics
are listed. When the top link is clicked, a blank white window appears and
Insight Diagnostics does not start. When the bottom link is clicked, the previous
installed version of Insight Diagnostics starts.

Diagnostics Limitations
Diagnostics limitations are feature constraints due to the environment
that diagnostics is running or features that have not been added in the
current version.
* Limited Survey information

Survey may not display complete information for some devices or information
for some devices may be limited. Data captures are based upon drivers
available to diagnostics.
* No Fan, Temperature, or Power Supply information available without
the HP Management Agents installed and running.
Description
Diagnostics is dependent on the HP Management Agents for
several health related devices such as fans, temperature sensors,
and power supplies. If the Management Agents are not running,
diagnostics ignores these devices and it appears as if they do not
exist.
Workarounds
Ensure that you are running the latest HP Management Agents.
Then Install Insight Diagnostics on your Linux partition.

Fibre Channel PCI cards are identified, but testing and identification of
attached storage devices are not available at this time.
* Certain devices are not available for testing when running Insight Diagnostics
Description
Network Interface Controllers and CD-ROM drives cannot be tested.
* Extended periods of testing, that last over 48 hours, may
unexpectedly cause Insight Diagnostics to stop running.
Description
When running Insight Diagnostics continuously for several days or
performing multiple diagnostics activities in a single session, the
user interface may stop responding to user input.
Workarounds
Power cycle the system and re-run Insight Diagnostics.
===============================================================
Diagnostics Notes
Diagnostics notes are usability issues that the user should be aware of,
but should not be considered problems.
* Floppy I/O error reported during Survey capture
Description
During Survey capture, HP Insight Diagnostics attempts to determine the
size of the media installed in the floppy drive. If no media is inserted
in the floppy drive, a Floppy I/O error is reported by the Operating System.
* "Unsupported operating system" reported
Description
This error indicates that HP Insight Diagnostics is attempting to run on an
unsupported operating system.
Workarounds
Run Insight Diagnostics on a supported operating system.
* RPM does not uninstall all diagnostics files.
Description
Uninstallation of Insight Diagnostics does not remove files generated
when running diagnostics.
Workarounds
Some files may be generated during the execution of Insight Diagnostics.
Manually remove the /opt/hp/hpdiags directory with the command
"rm -rf /opt/hp/hpdiags". By default Survey capture XML files are not removed.
* Incorrect PCI slot number reported a device
Description
An incorrect PCI slot number may be reported by the SMBIOS
and subsequently by Insight Diagnostics.
Workarounds
Update to the current system ROM and rerun Insight Diagnostics.
* Array Controller memory size is reported incorrectly on some controllers
Description
Array Controller memory is often underreported in the Overview
section of diagnostics, especially for controllers with 64 MB or
less of memory. This is a problem where the array controller
firmware misreports the physical memory size to diagnostics.
Workarounds
The actual controller memory size is reported during power-on
self-test (POST). An Array Controller firmware upgrade may
resolve this issue.
* USB Root Hub information is different from what is reported by the
Operating System
Description
The Root Hub information may be displayed differently from the Operating System information.
Workarounds
USB information is correctly displayed by the operating system. A correction
will be added in a future version of diagnostics.
* Unable to save to USB Floppy
Description
If you attach a USB floppy to the system after Insight Diagnostics is already running, you
will be unable to save information to floppy.
Workarounds
Install the USB floppy drive and reboot the system and run Insight Diagnostics.
