Welcome to SmartStart v7.70 The SmartStart CD provides several tools for Linux users to enhance the deployment and manageability of ProLiant servers. The Linux ProLiant Support Pack (PSP) contains the latest tested and approved set of drivers, utilities, agents, and applications for your ProLiant server. The Linux PSP provides GUI-based, terminal window-based or silent scriptable installations of its contents. The Linux Diskette Builder Utility provides the latest driver diskettes for supported ProLiant storage options. What's New in the Linux ProLiant Support Packs o Updated Operating System Support o Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 8 (x86 & AMD64/EM64T) o Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 4 (x86 & AMD64/EM64T) o The HP Tested and Approved Linux Bonding Driver was removed from the ProLiant Support Pack for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3, and the HP Tested and Approved Linux 802.1q VLAN Driver was removed from the ProLiant Support Pack for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 and the ProLiant Support Pack for SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9. Please refer to Customer Notice c00673238, “HP Focusing on Support VLAN and Bonding (Teaming) Driver in Red Hat Linux and SUSE Linux Kernels Beginning with SmartStart Release 7.70," for additional information. Supported Distributions of Linux The SmartStart CD provides support for the following distributions of Linux: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 (x86) Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 (AMD64/EM64T) Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (x86) Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (AMD64/EM64T) SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 (x86) SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 (AMD64/EM64T) SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 10 (x86) SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 10 (AMD64/EM64T) NOTE: x86 = Support for Intel and AMD 32-bit servers AMD64 = Supports AMD Opteron-based 64-bit servers EMT64 = Supports Intel Enhanced Memory Technology 64-bit servers Minimum Requirements The command interpreter (shell) /bin/bash must be installed. For autorun capabilties, the system must be running X with a window manager and an installed browser. For some distributions, the CD must be mounted and the ./autorun command executed for autorun to function. Installation of the Linux ProLiant Support Pack Using Autorun PSP's may be installed via autorun if autorun is configured on the target Linux server. Red Hat distributions include autorun. If autorun is not installed, it must be installed and properly configured before beginning. Autorun will typically mount the CD-ROM on /mnt/cdrom for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 for Updates prior to Update 5. With Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 5 and later, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, and SUSE based distributions, autorun will typically mount the CD-ROM on /media/cdrom. For other distributions, several autorun utilities are available for download from various Internet sites. These distributions will typically mount the CD-ROM on /media/cdrom. For the purposes of this readme, the CD-ROM is assumed to have been mounted on /mnt/mnt. The actual mount point should replace /mnt/mnt when executing these instructions. To use the SmartStart CD in Linux, complete the following steps. o Login on the console as root. o Insert the CD. If autorun is activated, skip the next step. o If autorun is not activated, manually mount the CD and execute the autorun script (e.g. /mnt/mnt/autorun). o On the End User License Agreement screen of autorun, select the Agree button if you agree with the terms of the agreement and wish to proceed with autorun. Select Disagree if you do not agree with the terms of the agreement and wish to exit autorun. o Select the Software tab. o Select the "Install the ProLiant Support Pack" option to install the desired Linux PSP. NOTE: Instructions for using the Linux PSP are located on the CD in the file /mnt/mnt/compaq/csp/psp-users-guide.pdf where /mnt/mnt is to be replaced by the actual mount point for the CD on the target system. Manual Installation of the Linux ProLiant Support Pack For the remainder of this discussion, the CD mount directory will be considered to be /mnt/mnt. The actual mount point should replace /mnt/mnt when executing these instructions. Typically Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Updates prior to Update 5 and earlier distributions mount CD's on /mnt/cdrom. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 5 and later, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and SUSE based distributions mount CD's on /media/cdrom. If the CD-ROM mount point is not defined in /etc/fstab, a complete mount command will be required. o Login on the console as root. o Insert the SmartStart CD. o Mount the CD (e.g. mount /mnt/mnt or mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/mnt). o Change to the /compaq/csp/linux directory. o Execute the ./install770.sh command to install the Linux ProLiant Support Pack. o The installer will copy necessary files to a temporary area on the disk. Once the files are copied, the installer will open an interactive session. NOTE: Instructions for using the installer are located on the CD in the file /mnt/mnt/compaq/csp/psp-users-guide.pdf. Executing the Linux Diskette Builder Utility Using Autorun Red Hat distributions include autorun. If autorun is not installed, it must be installed and properly configured before beginning. Autorun will typically mount the CD-ROM on /mnt/cdrom for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 for Updates prior to Update 5. With Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 5 and later, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and SUSE based distributions, autorun will typically mount the CD-ROM on /media/cdrom. Select Disagree if you do not agree with the terms of the agreement and wish to exit autorun. o Select the Software tab. o Select the "Create Driver Diskette" option to create the desired Linux driver diskettes. Manual Execution of the Linux Diskette Builder Utility For the remainder of this discussion, the CD mount directory will be considered to be /mnt/mnt. The actual mount point should replace /mnt/mnt when executing these instructions. Typically Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 distributions up through Update 4 mount CD's on /mnt/cdrom. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 5 and later, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and SUSE based distributions mount CDs on /media/cdrom. If the CD-ROM mount point is not defined in /etc/fstab, a complete mount command will be required. o Login on the console as root. o Insert the SmartStart CD. o Mount the CD (e.g. mount /mnt/mnt or mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/mnt). o Change to the /punchout/linux directory on the CD. o Execute the application by using the ./lnxbldr.sh command. o Follow the prompts to build the needed diskette images for use during installation of the Linux distribution. NOTE: At the end of the diskette build process, an option is given to view the readme, if provided, for the given diskette. Any commands needed at the Linux boot prompt are also provided at the conclusion of the diskette build process. Copyright © 2003, 2006 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L. P.
